Why Acquainted Joy?

Sammy Davis Jr. has a song called, "Smile, Darn Ya, Smile". One of the lyrics is: "It's time for you and joy to get acquainted. So make life worthwhile! Come on and smile, darn ya, smile!" What a clever take on joy! When I heard the song, I couldn't stop thinking about the idea of joy not being something that's handed to you or something that should "just happen", but joy being something that has to be learned, taught, and experienced in order to fully know... and so came, Acquainted Joy.

I've had a number of blogs over the years that I usually abandon after a few months. With each blog, I've realized my aim was to get other people to read what I was writing. Duh, right? But I was more concerned with people reading my blog than I was with actually writing my blog. So what started as an attempt to share my heart would quickly turn into surface level writing about nothing because I was too scared to offend or upset or not be understood.

I’m inherently a people-pleaser and an introvert, both of which contribute to the problem. Half the time, I’m analyzing every word that I say to ensure that it’s politically correct, that it comes across as nice and not harsh or judgmental, or even that it won’t cause the other person to think less of me or judge me. The other half of the time, I’m too reserved to even share so I gloss over with a “Yeah, I’m fine. It's fine. We're fine. Everything's fine." (Read up on the INFJ personality type if you want to know anymore of my flaws haha)

I realize that's not always the healthiest mode of communication...especially since FINE means = freaked out, insecure, neurotic and emotional (extra points if you get the reference).

So, Acquainted Joy is a journey. A journey to be real and honest. To be open to what life has in store: good and bad. This blog will be a place where I share my heart, my faith, my dream, my random thoughts.. and anything else that brings me joy (did you see what I did there? haha).

So here's to getting well acquainted with joy! Hope you'll come along.
